First Iberian lynx litters born in the wild detected in Guarrizas and Doñana
2018-03-27
Specialists from the LIFE Iberlince project for the 'Recovery of the historical distribution of the Iberian lynx in Spain and Portugal' (2011-2018) detected the first Iberian lynx litters born in the wild this season. Specifically, they located a litter of three cubs of the female 'Granadilla' in the Valle del Guarrizas area (Jaén), and another litter of two specimens in the Doñana area.
According to their first observations, both litters are in good condition, and are being fed by their progenitors.
For 'Granadilla', one of the area’s first territorial females, this was not her first breeding. She first reproduced in the spring of 2012, at two years of age. Since then, she reproduced every spring, with the exception of 2015, during which she produced no offspring.
This territorial female was released in Santa Elena (Jaén) in February 2011. At present, she is one of this reintroduction area’s territorial females, where more than 74 specimens live, according to the latest population census data od 2017.
The Iberlince project would like to ask all naturalists and lovers of the species for increased awareness so that, in their interest for conservation and their desire to observe the lynx in the wild, they are as respectful as possible in this highly sensitive time.
