Iberlince releases a male Iberian lynx in the Guarrizas reintroduction area

The release of 'Orisón' concludes the 2018 releases in this area, where a total of four lynxes were released since February

This morning, the Life+Iberlince project 'Recovery of the historical distribution of the Iberian lynx in Spain and Portugal' (2011-2018) released an Iberian lynx male named 'Orisón' at the Dehesa de las Yeguas estate, located in the La Carolina municipality (Jaén). This release concludes this season’s releases in the Guarrizas valley reintroduction area, in which a total of four lynxes were released since February.

It should be interesting to note that 'Orisón', son of the female 'Jaipur' and the male 'Jota', is a young one-year-old specimen from the El Acebuche captive breeding centre (Huelva). His name, which matches that of an Iberian guerrilla from the third century B. C., was chosen during the #BautizaUnLince campaign among proposals sent by citizens through social media.

Iberian lynx releases in the Guarrizas reintroduction area began in 2010. Since then, a total of 48 specimens have been released to the wild, to which two females - 'Ofelia 'and' Olavide' - and two males -'Obulco 'and' Orisón'- were added this season.

Along with the Guadalmellato valley (Córdoba), this area was chosen for reintroduction due to its habitat quality, high volume of wild rabbit populations and strong social support for reintroduction, including the collaboration of estate owners, private companies and hunting societies that manage lands where the lynx population group is concentrated.
