Iberian lynx specimen run over on the EN 122 in Portugal

On May 2nd, a male Iberian lynx was found injured with signs of having been run over on the EN 122 motorway, connecting Beja and Mértola (Portugal) by a neighbor of Mértola, Pero Simões, who immediately notified SEPNA (Nature and Environment Protection Service).

With the support of the SEPNA, an ICNF (Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests) monitoring team visited the site, proceeding to capture the animal, which had gone into a forest adjacent to the road. The wounded animal was transferred to the Loures Veterinary Surgery Centre, a clinic specializing in orthopaedic procedures, where it was subjected to a surgical intervention from which the feline, ultimately, did not survive.

On behalf of the Life Iberlince project, once again, we appeal drivers to take extreme caution when driving in areas where the Iberian lynx is present, and remind all that that the speed limit is 60 kilometres per hour.
