It is known that lynxes, like other carnivores, sometimes tend towards "matrilineal philopatry". That is, daughters remain in the territories surrounding the mother's, or even share the same. An example of this was observed in 2014 on an estate in Sierra de Andujar – which holds a collaboration agreement with the CBD-Habitat Foundation – where the case of the females "Sierpe" (<1999), "Betis" (2005), and "Granza" (2010), (grandmother, daughter and granddaughter respectively) took place, occupying three neighbouring territories (07/30/2014):

We described how "Granza" had a three cub litter, "Sierpe’s" first great-grandchildren. This old female disappeared from her territory a couple of years later, perhaps over 16 years old. As a new example, in 2018, one of the "Granza" puppies had its own litter. And, "Magarza", as the first female is called, aged three, is residing precisely in the territory vacated by her great-grandmother "Sierpe".
On the other hand, males are known to disperse and move around more in order to compensate for these behaviours (from a genetic standpoint. For example, in two of these territories, a permutation of males was detected, perhaps as a strategy to improve genetics.
As we stated in 2014, we hope that one of the of "Magarza’s" new cubs is a female, that it stays in Sierra de Andujar, and has cubs of its own, thus perpetuating the lineage of these lynxes.
