The Iberlince project organizes nocturnal Iberian lynx excursions to introduce citizens to the species’ territories
2018-05-28
As part of its informative actions, the Life+Iberlince project 'Recovery of the historical distribution of the Iberian lynx in Spain and Portugal' (2011-2018) scheduled a series of night excursions in the Córdoba and Jaén provinces for the month of June, with the goal of allowing citizens to trek the territories in which the Iberian lynx is present, accompanied by project specialists.
The first of these hiking expeditions (a total of 9.5 kilometers and of easy-medium intensity) will take place next Saturday, June 2nd, in Villafranca de Córdoba (Córdoba). Participants will depart from the town’s fairgrounds at 21.00 hours, and return to the starting point after completing a three-and-a-half-hour circular itinerary through the territories where the Iberian lynx is present.
Among other places, the route includes Los Mojones, Sierrezuela, Fuente Agria and the Sierra Morena observatory. From these natural spaces, one can observe different mountain ranges i the Jaén province and, therefore, connection routes between Iberian lynx populations in both reintroduction areas.
Participants will be interested in knowing that, according to the latest Iberian lynx population census data (pertaining to 2017), a total of 63 specimens inhabit the area.
This participatory initiative – during which specialists will teach trekkers the essentials about the Iberian lynx’s (Lynx pardinus) biology and ecology, as well as actions carried out by the Life Iberlince project in the area – aims to raise awareness regarding the importance of social participation in the recovery of endangered species.
For further information about the Iberian lynx nocturnal excursions, or to sign up for them, please send an email to info@ecotactil.com or call 633 121 553 or 600 345 991. A free bus connection from Córdoba to Villafranca de Córdoba will be made available to participants.
