Castilla-La Mancha gains 16 new Iberian lynx offspring born in the wild
2018-08-06
Since 2016, when the first offspring of specimens reintroduced by the Life Iberlince project was detected, a total of 65 specimens were born.
A total of eight territorial reproductive females located in the Castilla-La Mancha reintroduction areas (Montes de Toledo and Sierra Morena Oriental, in Ciudad Real) have given birth to at least 16 Iberian lynx cubs this year in Castilla-La Mancha, as confirmed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Development.
In Montes de Toledo, of the 12 territorial females of breeding age currently being monitored, six births have been confirmed, as reported by the government of Castilla-La Mancha in a press release.
Currently, a total of five litters are located in this reintroduction area, with a total of eight confirmed cubs: three of Lava, in her first breeding year; two of 'Malvasia', in her second consecutive breeding year, and who, like Mirabel, has a single confirmed cub but could have a second one; and, similarly, 'Nereida' and 'Ninfa', with one confirmed breeding, but possibly having two cubs in their litters.
To these, one would have to add females ‘Lila’ and ‘Nenúfar’’s other two litters, which have not yet been visually verified.
In the Ciudad Real province, in Western Sierra Morena, of the five territorial females of breeding age, three have given birth so far this year, with a total of eight verified cubs. The females in question are: 'Mesta', in her second year breeding, with a total of three offspring; 'Minerva', with a second breeding this year accounting for four new offspring; and 'Kiki', who gave birth to a cub in her third breeding year. Another two possible litters by females 'Kiowa' and 'Naira' have not yet been confirmed.
