IBERLINCE RELEASES EIGHT NEW SPECIMENS OF IBERIAN LYNX IN “MONTES DE TOLEDO”
2014-11-13
Technicians of Life+Iberlince project and the Agriculture Department of the Council of Communities of Castilla la Mancha complete the Works, to proceed, in the coming weeks, to the reintroduction of eight iberian lynx specimens in “Montes de Toledo”, one of the historic areas, where the specie has always been present.
Keres, Kea, Karma, Jabillo, Kentaro, Kahn, Kendo, Kuna, are the names assigned to these specimens, and with which, the Life+Iberlince Project intends to recover the presence of Lynx in a territory where before the eighties, welcomed one of the main centers of the population of this species in the Iberian Peninsula.
The released held in Montes de Toledo, is processed after a summer where the first reintroduction of the specie took place, in Castilla-La Mancha, Eastern Sierra Morena, where were released other eight specimens, all of them coming from Ex - situ program, which manages the different centers of reproduction in captivity of this specie.
The Iberian Lynxs that will be released on Montes Toledos, comes from the reproduction centers of El Acebuche, La Olivilla, Zarza de Granadilla and Silves, that are located in Andalucía, Extremadura and Portugal.
As there was a selection of exemplary reintroduced in Eastern Sierra Morena, in this case, the selection also took into account the genetic variability and proper sex ratio in the delivered specimens.
The Lynx release will occur in a large territory of the province of Toledo, previously selected, that meets the criteria and the appropriate biological conditions, which proves to be an able area for this species reintroduction.
